To them, it was very similar with all other Jewish ghettos, being bad places in which to live and no respect. Unlike the real ghetto, there were no protests or riots as the St. Louis and Warsaw ghettos.
When the Warsaw ghetto paper topics are compared to the St. Louis ghetto, they could clearly see the differences. For example, there was a much higher intensity of Polish newspapers and magazines in the Warsaw ghetto. This intensified the animosity against the Poles, in general. The Warsaw ghetto was not a ghetto in the same sense as the St. Louis one; rather, it was something different. One big difference was that the Warsaw ghetto and the St. Louis ghetto were much smaller. It had far fewer Jews, and fewer Slavs as well. In comparison, when the Warsaw ghetto was bombed in 1943, the great majority of Jews in the Warsaw ghetto had escaped, while a smaller number of St. Louis Jews had been forced to escape. Also, the Warsaw ghetto was established in an area which was largely white in color, while the St. Louis ghetto was set up in a part of the city which was mostly African American in color. The Warsaw ghetto was more contained by a wall than the St. Louis ghetto was. But the St. Louis ghetto is a great example of how an ethnic group can easily be divided by race and religion. This is very much the case with the Warsaw ghetto. Also, the Warsaw ghetto was much smaller than the St. Louis ghetto, and it is more compact in area as well. The inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto consisted of only about fifty thousand people; whereas, the residents of the St. Louisghetto were over a million. When the Warsaw ghetto was bombed, and the Jews were shot down from the sky, the Warsaw ghetto made only eight deaths and the St. Louis ghetto made five hundred. These figures were much lower than the number of dead of more than six thousand Jews and four thousand Slavs in the Warsaw ghetto. The St. Louis ghetto did not make this kind of difference in its sufferings.
